Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was not merely a ruler of a particular era, but the pioneer of a progressive social and economic ideology, senior historian Dr Umesh Bagade said on Friday.

On the occasion of the memorial day of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the departments of history from Devgiri College (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), Pratishthan College, Paithan, and Sant Tukaram College, Kannad, jointly organised an online lecture on the topic ‘Why Remember Shivaji?’ in association with Lok Samvad Foundation. Principals Dr Ravi Patil, Dr Sharad Gawande and G. S. Sonkambale, along with Dr Rajesh Karpe and Dr Mahesh Rote, were present. Dr Bagade stated that the spiritual message of equality propagated by the saints was given political and social foundation by Shivaji through the establishment of Swarajya. Bringing together people from diverse castes and communities to build Swarajya was not merely a military necessity, but a successful social experiment in equality, he said. The presidential address was delivered by Dr Gawande. The introductory remarks were made by Dr Rajesh Karpe, while the programme was anchored by Dr Mahesh Rote. Dr Suvarna Patil proposed the vote of thanks. Among those present were Dr Ganesh Mohite, Dr Chetana Sonkambale, Dr Mukesh Bhoge, Dr Amol Maske, Dr Balasaheb Tekale, Prof Rajaram Jeve and Dr Subhash Suryawanshi.
