Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

An alarming trend of consuming soil, chalk, wall plaster and even small stones is emerging, especially among women. This habit, medically known as Pica Syndrome, stems from nutritional deficiencies, primarily a lack of haemoglobin, iron, calcium, and zinc.

This addiction has grown so widespread that some people purchase edible soil from shops. Retailers, like Swapnil Mugdia, confirm that special “edible soil” is available in the market at Rs 50 per kilogram.

What triggers this Craving?

Iron and mineral deficiencies trigger unnatural cravings, leading individuals to consume soil, coal, chalk, and soap. This condition is most commonly observed in children and pregnant women. While it is considered normal in infants up to the teething stage, continuing beyond the age of three requires urgent medical intervention.

More harmful than tobacco

Eating soil exposes the body to toxins, leading to digestive issues, intestinal damage, infections, jaundice, and declining haemoglobin levels. If left unchecked, the habit can cause severe long-term health complications.

Rural women are most affected, but urban cases rising

Many rural women develop this habit during pregnancy due to iron deficiency. However, urban cases are also on the rise, highlighting the need for greater awareness and medical intervention.

Increase iron intake

Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology of GMCH Dr Srinivas Gadappa, stresses the importance of iron-rich diets. "Checking haemoglobin levels is essential. As haemoglobin increases, the craving for soil naturally disappears," he explains.

Seek medical help

Ignoring this habit can lead to severe health risks. Those affected should undergo nutritional assessments and make dietary changes. Medical consultation is crucial to prevent long-term damage and improve overall health.
