A road worker died in a horrific accident after a speeding gas tanker (MH-27-DT-4506) hit him while he was painting white side-effect stripes on the road. The impact threw Pundalik Nivrutti Navgire (40, Pimpalgaon Pandhari), onto the road-marking machine, and an iron rod from the machine pierced through his chest and exited from his back, killing him on the spot. The incident occurred around 11 am on Thursday on the Cambridge Chowk–Zalta Chowk road.
Police said road-marking work is currently underway on highways in the Zalta area through a contractor engaged by a private company. While Navgire was working with the machine, a speeding tanker coming from behind rammed into him, causing him to fall onto the machine and suffer the fatal injury. Chikalthana police rushed to the spot and shifted the body to the district civil hospital post-mortem centre. After the accident, a large crowd gathered at the spot, creating tension. Relatives alleged that the company and contractor had made no safety arrangements and had not deployed any responsible officer or co-worker to assist the worker. Navgire was the sole breadwinner of his family and is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. Based on a complaint filed by Navgire’s brother Vitthal Navgire, Chikalthana police registered a case against the tanker driver and the contractor and supervisor of G.N.I. Company for negligence. Assistant inspector Samadhan Pawar is conducting further investigation.
