Workers sitting in the shade when tragedy struck
According to details, five workers employed by Megha Engineering were engaged in repair work of the iron cross barrels along the expressway. After finishing the work, they sat down in the shade between the company’s service truck (MH40BM8048) and a JCB machine (MH20FU3208) to have their lunch. The work was being carried out with the required safety barricades in place.
Vehicles dragged nearly 175 feet
At the same time, a truck (MH40CD5355) carrying iron rods and travelling from Jalna towards Nagpur rammed into the stationary service truck from behind at high speed. The impact was so severe that the service truck was pushed forward, crushing the workers and colliding with the JCB parked ahead.
The truck then dragged both vehicles for nearly 175 feet, resulting in the immediate death of three workers in the horrific collision. The accident has once again raised concerns about safety on the Samruddhi Expressway.
The bodies of the deceased and the injured workers have been taken to the GMCH for treatment, officials said.
