Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

Doctors in the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) department at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) have successfully performed surgery on an extremely rare nerve tumor called a ‘Schwannoma,’ which occurs in only one in every two lakh patients. The complex procedure was completed successfully thanks to precise diagnosis, prompt decision-making, and effective team coordination.

A 42-year-old woman, resident of the city, was diagnosed with a lump behind her right cheek (maxillary region) and admitted to the GMCH on January 7 for treatment. Initial examinations suggested the lump was simple, and surgery was planned accordingly. However, during surgery, unexpected bleeding indicated that the lump was not ordinary but of a different type. The surgery was successfully completed on January 10, and subsequent examination confirmed the lump to be a Schwannoma, a rare tumor arising from the protective cells of nerves. Schwannomas in the maxillary sinus are considered extremely rare. The patient has recently been discharged from the hospital.
