Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

If money is being demanded for civic works, the effective use of advanced technology at such points is essential. Only then can corruption be eliminated, said newly appointed Municipal Commissioner Amol Yedge. He added that some firm decisions will have to be taken to increase the municipal corporation’s revenue, and such decisions are likely to be made in the coming days.

On Monday afternoon, Yedge visited various departments at the municipal headquarters, reviewed their functioning and issued instructions to staff. Speaking to the media later, he said that he had spent Sunday reviewing different departments. Considering the loans taken for water supply and other factors, the corporation’s expenditure is set to rise significantly. There is no option but to increase revenue to meet this expenditure.

New sources of income will have to be identified, and property tax collection will need to be substantially improved. There are also large arrears, which will require focused attention. For now, projects that can generate revenue for the corporation will be approved. Ongoing projects will need to be completed so that they can start generating income.

Property valuation essential

He further stated that proper valuation of properties could also significantly boost revenue. At present, there is no proposal to increase property tax rates. Revenue generation through the Town Planning (TP) section is also possible. He emphasised that two key priorities for the city are a new water supply scheme and solid waste management, and these will receive greater focus.
