Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

City Chowk police arrested a 57-year-old trader for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman on the pretext of marriage. The special court, presided over by judge A.R. Ubale, on Thursday remanded the accused to police custody till April 4.

The accused has been identified as Mirza Irfan Beg (57), a resident of Shahabazar. A 29-year-old woman lodged the complaint. She works at a garment shop in the Shahabazar area, where she came into contact with the accused. He allegedly claimed to be unmarried and developed a relationship with her. On May 16, 2023, he allegedly took her to a showroom on the pretext of buying perfume, locked the door and sexually assaulted her. Thereafter, he allegedly assaulted her repeatedly over six months, promising marriage. He later rented a house and began living with her. Disputes arose after the woman discovered that he was married and had children. A case was registered at the City Chowk police station, following which Beg was arrested.
