A 26-year-old tanker operator, Sandesh Gawli, allegedly ended his life after his stolen truck remained untraced and loan instalments continued to mount. The incident occurred on Wednesday night.
Sandesh lived in Jay Bhavani Nagar with his parents, two brothers and sister. On Thursday evening, while the family had gone out for a function, he stayed back despite their insistence. Around 10 pm, they learned he had consumed poison. He was rushed to a private hospital but died during treatment around midnight. An accidental death has been registered after Friday’s post-mortem. Mukundwadi officer Digambar Darbale is investigating.
On October 6, 2024, Sandesh had purchased a truck (MH-46-F-2797) with a loan of Rs 21 lakh. The vehicle was stolen, and even after one-and-a-half years, police failed to trace it. As the truck was uninsured, he continued paying EMIs, pushing him into debt. Under stress, he wrote a one-and-a-half-page suicide note, took smiling selfies and sent them to friends on WhatsApp before consuming poison.

In the note, he alleged that Chikalthana police were responsible for his death, claiming their failure to recover the truck had ruined him financially. He wrote that he was ending his life due to the unpaid Rs 21 lakh loan and held no one else responsible. He apologised for the expenses after his death and urged others to take care of his mother, seeking her forgiveness.
Police said the family’s statement is yet to be recorded, and it is unclear whether the truck theft case was registered at the Chikalthana or MIDC Cidco police station. Further clarity is expected after recording the family’s statement.
