The state government has proposed an increase in bulk water usage rates for agricultural irrigation, industrial consumption and domestic supply. A proposal has been submitted to the government in this regard. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (MWRRA) has directed that existing rates continue till June 30.

Water from various minor, medium and major projects under the Water Resources Department is supplied for irrigation, industrial and drinking purposes. For agriculture, water is distributed through water user associations, which collect water charges. Industrial water is supplied through MIDC, while bulk domestic water is lifted by gram panchayats, municipal councils and municipal corporations for further distribution. The Water Resources Department levies water charges on the concerned agencies. The earlier water tariff rates expired in December 2025. A government-appointed committee has submitted its report recommending revised rates. After state approval, the proposal will require clearance from the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority. Until new rates are finalised, the department has been permitted to recover charges at existing rates till June 30, senior sources said.
