A 30-year-old woman died by suicide after allegedly being attacked and demeaned by her brother-in-law for playing a devotional hymn. MIDC Waluj Police have registered a case against the accused for abetment to suicide following her death during medical treatment.

The woman, identified as Sita Torkad from Ranjangaon Shenpunji, was allegedly physically assaulted by her neighbour and relative, Bhagwan Girhe, on the night of April 12. According to the FIR, the dispute began after Sita played a religious song on her mobile phone around 9 pm, prompting Girhe to confront her aggressively. He allegedly punched her in the stomach, yanked her hair, and subjected her to further violence. The next morning, Sita’s husband Yuvraj stepped out briefly to buy milk. During that time, Girhe reportedly resumed the confrontation, challenging Yuvraj and making provocative remarks. When Yuvraj returned, he discovered Sita engulfed in flames. She had allegedly doused herself in diesel and set herself alight.

Yuvraj acted swiftly, extinguishing the fire with the water and rushing her to a private clinic in Bajajnagar. She was later transferred to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). While being taken to the hospital, Sita reportedly told her husband that the humiliation caused by Girhe’s behaviour had driven her to the extreme act. Despite ongoing treatment, she succumbed to her injuries on April 19 around 2 am. Based on Yuvraj’s complaint, police have booked Bhagwan Girhe under relevant sections of the IPC. The investigation is underway.
