The news women in the urban sector are more victim of physical exploitation, and torture compared to women from the rural sector, stated the crime incidents registered with the urban and rural police in past two years.

The heinous rape incident which had taken place in Hathras (Uttar Pradesh) prompted to go through the records. The rise in crime in the urban sector is primarily due to rapid industrialisation.

As per the police records, 38 incidents of rape were reported in the rural sector from January to September (nine months), this year. On the other hand, in the same period, 62 cases of rape were registered in the urban sector, said a senior officer from the police commissionerate.

Besides, the police registered 119 incidents of molestation at different police stations in the rural sector and 181 from different police stations of the urban sector in nine months, this year. Women and spinster make the plaints of molestation. In the urban sector, the cases of women exploitation and molestation are more compared to the rural sector, reveals the data.

The incidents of rape had reduced this year. Last year, from January to September, the police registered 47 incidents of women exploitation and 100 cases of molestation. Harassment and torture to married women for want of dowry is another unstoppable crime. A total of 170 cases got registered about torture and harassment for want of dowry in the rural sector, during last year. This crime has reduced to 43 this year.

There are incidents where the in-laws are accused of abetting married women to commit suicide for dowry, apart from physical and mental harassment. In the rural sector, 18 women ended their lives to get rid of the torture for dowry in the past nine months.

However, the sources grieved that out of the total cases registered

only 30 per cent are proved, and the punishment is announced in connection with the crime against women.
