A 28-year-old highly educated youth, reportedly studying medicine abroad, allegedly leaked a domestic gas cylinder at his residence in Mukundwadi and threatened to ignite it with a lighter following a family dispute. The late-night incident triggered panic in the neighbourhood and prompted an urgent response from police and the fire brigade.
According to sources, the youth had been staying in the city for the past two months and was facing ongoing disagreements with his family. On Wednesday night, after an argument with his father while his mother was away in Mumbai, he allegedly forced his father out of the house. Around 11.30 pm, he disconnected the gas pipe, allowing the cylinder to leak, and stood holding a lighter, threatening to set off an explosion. The cylinder was reportedly full, intensifying fears among neighbours. Mukundwadi police inspector Sachin Ingole, along with Assistant Sub-Inspector Babasaheb Kamble and officer Ashok Kachare, rushed to the spot. Fire officer Shrikrishna Holambe also joined the operation.

Situation brought under control
Police and locals attempted to calm him through a window and over phone calls, while he monitored outside movements through CCTV cameras and continued issuing threats. As gas spread in the area, power supply was temporarily cut off and residents were advised to switch off mobile phones and gas connections as a precaution. Close friends of the youth were called to the scene. After prolonged persuasion and assurance, he stepped out of the house, bringing relief to residents.

Psychiatrist called in
Even after being taken to the police station, the youth reportedly continued making extreme statements. Police inspector Ingole summoned psychiatrist Sandeep Shisodiya, who counselled him for nearly an hour and helped stabilise the situation. Dr Shisodiya later stated that such incidents often stem from negative mental states and stress, and timely counselling can bring positive change. He emphasised that families and society must take collective responsibility in addressing mental health concerns.
