Chennai, March 15 The second 1,000 MW atomic power unit at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) shut down for maintenance works restarted power generation on Saturday.
The unit owned by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) was shut down on December 15, 2019 for maintenance works, said Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO) on Sunday.
The NPCIL has two 1,000 MW units at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu and two more such units were under construction there.
The power plants were built with the Russian technology provided by Rosatom.
The other atomic power generating unit of the NPCIL that is under shutdown is the 220 MW Unit 1 at the Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) near here.
The Unit 1 of MAPS was shut down on January 31, 2018 for maintenance works and is expected to restart generation on March 31, 2020.
