What began as a dream in a Tier-3 city has today become a growing youth movement. Founded in December 2022 in Siliguri, SelfUp Community is empowering students and young professionals across Tier-2 and Tier-3 India by combining skill development with real income pathways.
In just three years, the bootstrapped platform has built a network of over 10,000 active learners and has enabled more than 5,000 employment and income outcomes, demonstrating that meaningful impact can emerge from grassroots India.
A Comeback Built on Purpose
The journey of SelfUp Community is rooted in resilience. Two friends from Siliguri began their entrepreneurial journey during college by launching Porashona.com, an online tuition platform aimed at making quality education accessible across West Bengal. The venture scaled to 1,000 monthly students but eventually shut down due to operational and resource challenges.
After taking up separate jobs, the founders reunited post-COVID with a sharper mission.
“One thing became very clear to us,” said one of the founders. “Young people are not confused because they lack ambition. They are confused because they lack exposure and direction.”
The pandemic revealed a deeper issue, students wanted more than degrees. They wanted skills that could translate into income.
That insight led to the creation of the SelfUp Community.
Solving Career Confusion Beyond Metro Cities
Students in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities often struggle with limited access to mentorship, affordable skill education, and structured earning opportunities. Many platforms focus only on theoretical learning, leaving learners uncertain about how to monetise their skills.
SelfUp Community bridges this gap by ensuring that learning connects directly to real income pathways. The platform supports learners through structured skill training, mentorship guidance, practice frameworks, and opportunities in freelancing, affiliate models, and digital work.
It also enables educators and creators to teach and build sustainable income using technology-supported systems.
Real Stories Beyond the Numbers
Among the many learners is a college student from a small town in North Bengal who joined the platform to learn digital skills. Within months of completing training and mentorship support, the student secured freelance projects and began earning independently while continuing studies.
Such examples reflect the platform’s larger goal, not just teaching skills, but enabling financial confidence.
“Education should not end with certificates,” the founders stated. “It should lead to capability, clarity, and income.”
Growing with Community Support
Built entirely without external funding, SelfUp Community has grown organically through community referrals and value-driven engagement. The platform remains focused on affordability so that students from non-metro cities can access high-income skill training without financial burden.
With its roots firmly in Siliguri, the initiative demonstrates that impactful innovation does not require metropolitan infrastructure, only clarity of purpose and consistent execution.
Vision Ahead
SelfUp Community aims to impact over one million young Indians in the coming years by strengthening access to skills and income opportunities across Tier-2 and Tier-3 regions.
Its mission remains clear: no youngster should remain confused about career possibilities due to lack of exposure or opportunity.
