Lauding Delhi's public-private partnership (PPP) model in construction and demolition (C&D) waste management, the Economic Survey presented in the Parliament on Friday said that the same can be replicated in other states as well.

Days ahead of the Assembly elections in the nationl capital, the words of appreciation could be the much-needed shot in the arm for the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

"In India, the Delhi PPP model in C&D waste management can be a beacon for the other states/cities to replicate, enabling the Swachch Bharat Mission and supporting the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)," the Survey said.

The Survey noted that agricultural crop residue burning and construction and demolition waste continue to be major concerns. It stated that many countries are already using recycled C&D products in construction.

Before the winter sets in post Diwali, Delhi becomes a virtual gas chamber with air quality plummeting to 'severe' levels in the city. Vehicular emissions, fires on agricultural land, exhaust from diesel generators and dust from construction sites are generally blamed for the high pollution levels.

With rise in pollution levels, the local government puts restriction on vehicular movement by adopting the odd-even policy. Construction activities are also temporarily halted.

"Burning of agricultural residues, leading to rise in pollutant levels and deterioration of air quality, is still a major concern though the total number of burning events recorded reduced due to various efforts taken," the Survey said.
