From tea stalls to large shopping malls, payments are now widely made through Unified Payments Interface (UPI). In March 2026, 22.64 billion UPI transactions were recorded across India, highlighting its growing popularity. However, what remains a common concern is that, if money is accidentally sent to the wrong UPI ID, is there an ‘undo’ option to retrieve the money back?

It is important to understand that there is no ‘Undo’ or ‘Ctrl+Z’ feature in UPI apps. UPI transactions are processed in real time. Once you enter your PIN, the money is instantly transferred from your dedicated bank account to the recipient’s account. Without the recipient’s consent, the transaction cannot be reversed. However, there are still ways to try and recover the money.

What to Do If Money Is Sent to the Wrong UPI ID

If you realise that the payment has gone to the wrong person, do not panic. First, try calling or messaging the recipient. If the person is honest, they may return the money. If they refuse or do not respond, immediately report the issue through your UPI app and inform your bank. Most banking apps have a ‘Report Issue’ or ‘Raise Dispute’ option that allows you to file a complaint.

If you do not receive timely assistance from the bank, you can lodge a complaint on the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) portal under the ‘Dispute Redressal Mechanism’. Keep details such as the transaction ID, date and screenshots ready. You can also raise a complaint through the BHIM app.

If the issue remains unresolved, contact your bank’s nodal officer or grievance department. If there is no resolution within 30 days, you can escalate the matter to the RBI Ombudsman, which is a strong platform for resolving digital transaction disputes.

Precautions to Avoid UPI Wrong Transaction

Rs 1 Test Transfer: Always send Rs 1 before transferring a large amount to confirm the recipient.Use QR Codes: Scanning a QR code is safer than entering a mobile number manually.

Verify the Name: Carefully check the recipient’s name displayed on the screen before entering your PIN.
