Former Proteas batsman and domestic legend HD Ackerman was named the new batting coach of the Afghanistan team.  His tenure begins with the three-match T20I series against Ireland in March. A domestic stalwart, Ackerman played 4 Tests for South Africa all in 1998 scoring 161 runs from eight innings. The 46-year-old averages 43.85 as a first-class cricketer, with 14,625 runs and 40 hundreds.

Afghanistan is currently coached by Lance Klusener who was appointed in September last year after the team's disastrous campaign at the World Cup, where they lost all their games at the showpiece event held in England. According to reports, his contract will run till the end of 2020. Afghanistan's last international assignment was against the West Indies in which they won the T20 series but suffered a whitewash in the 3 ODIs and one-off Test in Lucknow.
