Australia National Cricket Team vs Ireland Cricket Team Match: Australia’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign has suffered a blow as captain Mitchell Marsh was ruled out of Wednesday’s opener against Ireland after sustaining a serious groin injury during training. Cricket Australia (CA) said Marsh was injured while receiving sidearm throwdowns from an assistant coach on Sunday and immediately left the nets for treatment. Scans confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will need a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return will depend on medical advice and symptom recovery.

Travis Head will lead the defending champions in Marsh’s absence. Steve Smith has been sent to Sri Lanka as cover, while pacer Sean Abbott is also travelling as a reserve. With Tim David recovering from a hamstring injury, Australia has just 12 fit players available for the match.

Marsh’s availability for the team’s second group match against Zimbabwe in two days remains uncertain. Australia is in Group B alongside Ireland, Oman, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. Head said the team is looking forward to building on recent performances and backing their game plan. Ireland captain Paul Stirling said his team would have batted as well and hoped familiarity with the conditions would give them a slight edge.
