Australia announced its final 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, set to begin on February 19 in Karachi. Steve Smith will continue as captain in the absence of regular skipper Pat Cummins. The team will also be without senior fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who withdrew due to personal reasons.

Australia made five changes to its squad, forced by multiple injuries and the retirement of all-rounder Marcus Stoinis. Starc, who played all seven Tests during the summer, has asked for privacy. He was seen struggling with his left ankle during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

"We understand and respect Mitch’s decision," chairman of selectors George Bailey said. "His commitment to international cricket and his willingness to play through pain and adversity have been remarkable. His absence is a blow for the Champions Trophy campaign, but this provides an opportunity for someone else to step up."

Squad Changes and Key Inclusions

Spencer Johnson replaced Starc in the squad. Johnson has played two ODIs and eight T20Is. Ben Dwarshuis, another left-arm seamer, was also included. Jake Fraser-McGurk was added as a backup opener, replacing Mitchell Marsh. Sean Abbott will serve as the third seamer as Australia transitions from its traditional pace trio.

Leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, who was with the Test squad in Sri Lanka as a development player, was the final addition. Aaron Hardie will fill Stoinis’ role as an all-rounder, while Glenn Maxwell remains the primary spin-bowling all-rounder.

Australia will play a couple of matches in Sri Lanka before heading to Pakistan for the tournament.
