Root resumed on 99 overnight and reached his 37th Test hundred. The milestone moved him past Steve Smith and Rahul Dravid to stand fifth on the all-time list behind Sachin Tendulkar, who has 51 centuries.

The five-match series is tied one-all after India bounced back to win the second Test at Edgbaston by 336 runs.
