England Cricket Team vs Sri Lanka National Cricket Team Standings: England opened its Super 8 campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a 51-run victory over Sri Lanka on Sunday, riding a disciplined bowling display to defend a modest total of 146-9. Sri Lanka was bowled out for 95 in 16.4 overs on a dry, two-paced surface at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Phil Salt top-scored with 62 off 40 balls to anchor England’s innings after it was sent in to bat. Will Jacks added 21 and later starred with the ball, taking 3-22 in a decisive powerplay spell.

England’s batting struggled for fluency. Jos Buttler made seven off 14 deliveries, Jacob Bethell fell attempting an expansive stroke, and Tom Banton was run out. Salt’s half-century proved crucial in pushing England to a competitive total.

Sri Lanka’s chase unraveled quickly under sustained pressure. Jofra Archer struck early, dismissing Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara with sharp pace and accuracy. Jacks then removed Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake off successive deliveries before adding Dunith Wellalage, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 34-5.

Kamindu Mendis chipped a return catch to Liam Dawson, and Dushan Hemantha was dismissed after hitting his own stumps attempting a shot off Jamie Overton. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka top-scored with 30 off 24 balls but fell to a relay catch on the boundary involving Jacks and Tom Banton, effectively ending the resistance.

The surface offered grip and turn, and England’s spinners capitalized. Captain Harry Brook kept Jacks in the attack for a third over, a move that paid off as Wellalage miscued an aggressive charge.

Sri Lanka had previously chased 182 at the venue against Australia during the group stage, but the slower conditions on Sunday made stroke play difficult.

England next faces Pakistan on Tuesday and New Zealand on Friday in its remaining Super 8 matches. Two wins would guarantee a semifinal berth, while one victory could still be sufficient depending on other results.
