Punjab Kings began their IPL 2025 campaign with a thrilling 11-run victory over Gujarat Titans in a high-scoring contest at Narendra Modi Stadium on March 25. Led by newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer, Punjab posted a commanding 243 for 5 before restricting Gujarat to 232 for 5 in a chase that went down to the wire.
Iyer shines with career-best 97 not out
Batting first, Punjab Kings got off to a flying start, thanks to Priyansh Arya’s explosive 47 off 23 balls. Arya struck seven fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 204.35. After the quick dismissals of Prabhsimran Singh and Arya, Iyer took charge. The Punjab skipper delivered a breathtaking knock of 97 not out off 42 balls, smashing five fours and nine sixes at a strike rate of 230.95. He was well-supported by Shashank Singh, who added a fiery 44 off just 16 balls to push Punjab to a daunting total.
Gujarat’s bowlers had a tough outing. Mohammed Siraj conceded 54 runs in his four overs, while Arshad Khan gave away 21 runs in a single over. Only Sai Kishore provided some control, taking three wickets for 30 runs in his four overs.

Sai Sudharsan anchored the innings with a brilliant 74 off 41 balls, hitting five fours and six sixes. Jos Buttler added 54 off 33 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford chipped in with 46 off 28 deliveries.
Despite their efforts, Gujarat fell short as Punjab’s bowlers held their nerve in the final overs. Arshdeep Singh delivered two crucial blows, dismissing Sudharsan and Rutherford. He also contributed to the runout of Rahul Tewatia, further derailing Gujarat’s chase. Arshdeep finished with figures of 2 for 36, while Marco Jansen and Maxwell claimed a wicket each.
