India National Cricket Team vs England Cricket Team: India’s thrilling seven-run victory over England in the semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday was not only a dramatic contest but also a record-breaking encounter. India posted 253 for 7 after being asked to bat first and then restricted England to 246 for 7 to reach the final for the second consecutive edition.

The match saw a combined 499 runs scored by both teams, the second-highest aggregate in men’s T20 internationals. Only the 517-run match between South Africa and West Indies in Centurion in 2023 ranks higher.

Three of the four highest match aggregates in T20 internationals now involve India. Earlier this year, India and New Zealand combined for 496 runs in Thiruvananthapuram, while India and West Indies produced 489 runs in Lauderhill in 2016.

Sanju Samson led India’s batting effort with 89 off 42 balls, including eight fours and seven sixes. Shivam Dube contributed 43 off 25 balls, while Ishan Kishan scored 39 off 18. Late cameos from Tilak Varma (21 off 7) and Hardik Pandya (27 off 12) helped India record the highest total in a T20 World Cup knockout match.

England mounted a strong response led by Jacob Bethell, who scored a maiden T20 international century with 105 runs. Despite a 77-run partnership with Will Jacks, England finished on 246 for 7 and fell just short of the target.

The semifinal also set new tournament benchmarks for power-hitting. A total of 34 sixes were struck in the match, the most in a T20 World Cup game. The match also featured 73 boundaries, including 39 fours, another tournament record.

Bethell’s century became one of the highest individual scores in a T20 World Cup knockout match. New Zealand’s Finn Allen also recorded a century earlier in the tournament, while Samson’s 89 joined the list of top scores in knockout games.

England’s campaign also featured a record contribution from the lower order. Will Jacks scored 226 runs batting at No. 6 or lower across the tournament, the most by any player in a single T20 World Cup edition.

With the victory, India advanced to its fourth T20 World Cup final — the most by any team — and joined Pakistan (2007 and 2009) and Sri Lanka (2012 and 2014) as the only teams to reach consecutive finals in the competition.

India will face New Zealand in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday as it looks to defend its title.
