India national cricket team recorded its highest PowerPlay total in the history of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup during the 2026 final against the New Zealand national cricket team at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8, 2026. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson took full advantage of the field restrictions, powering India to 92 without loss in the first six overs.
The total marked India’s highest PowerPlay score in T20 World Cup history and also equaled the joint-highest PowerPlay score recorded in the tournament. The previous instance of a team reaching 92 runs in the first six overs came when the West Indies cricket team achieved the feat against the Afghanistan national cricket team in the 2024 edition.
India’s previous best PowerPlay total in the tournament was 86 for 1 against the Namibia national cricket team earlier in the 2026 World Cup in New Delhi.
Sharma led the charge with an explosive innings, breaking his lean run of form with an 18-ball half-century — the fastest fifty recorded in a knockout match of the tournament.
India’s other notable PowerPlay totals in T20 World Cups include 82 for 2 against the Scotland national cricket team in 2021, 80 for 1 against the Zimbabwe national cricket team in 2026, 76 for 1 against New Zealand in 2007 and 60 for 1 against the Australia national cricket team in the 2024 edition.
