IPL 2026: Several Indian Premier League teams will begin the 2026 season without key players, as injuries and availability issues disrupt squad plans just days before the tournament kicks off on March 28, 2026. Franchises are dealing with a mix of long-term absentees and players expected to miss the opening phase.

Players ruled out

Chennai Super Kings will be without fast bowler Nathan Ellis, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. The Australian was expected to handle death-overs duties, and his absence leaves the team searching for alternatives, with Matt Henry and Jamie Overton among the immediate options.

Kolkata Knight Riders have lost Harshit Rana for the entire season after the pacer underwent knee surgery earlier this year. The injury originated during a T20 World Cup warm-up game, and he remains under rehabilitation.

Rajasthan Royals have also suffered a major blow, with England all-rounder Sam Curran ruled out due to a groin problem. The franchise now faces a shortage of overseas all-rounders and is assessing replacement options.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Jack Edwards will miss the tournament with an undisclosed injury, denying the Australian a chance to make his IPL debut.

Mumbai Indians youngster Atharva Ankolekar has been ruled out after undergoing surgery for a knee injury sustained in domestic cricket earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders will not have Mustafizur Rahman despite the pacer being fit. He was released following BCCI directives amid off-field developments, prompting the franchise to sign Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani as cover.

Players set to miss early matches

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins is still recovering from a back injury and is expected to sit out the initial games. Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan will lead the side in his absence.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Josh Hazlewood is also unavailable for the opening fixtures as he continues his recovery from a hamstring and Achilles issue. His return is expected next month.

Kolkata Knight Riders are monitoring Matheesha Pathirana, who is recovering from a calf strain and is unlikely to feature at the start of the competition.

Lucknow Super Giants leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga remains a fitness concern after picking up a hamstring injury, with no confirmed timeline for his return.

Punjab Kings will be without Lockie Ferguson in the early stages, as the fast bowler is on leave following the birth of his child.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Eshan Malinga is another doubtful starter after suffering a shoulder injury, while Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Matthew Short is racing to recover from a thumb fracture.
