Mumbai Indians once again left out former captain Rohit Sharma from the starting XI as they took on Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match No. 33 of the IPL 2025 season at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. The 37-year-old veteran opener was named among the five Impact Substitutes for the game and is expected to feature later during Mumbai's second innings. Rohit has struggled for form this season. In five matches, the veteran opener has scored just 56 runs at an average of 11.20 and a strike rate of 136.58. He also missed one game earlier in the tournament after being struck on the leg during warm-up.
Led by Hardik Pandya, Mumbai won the toss and opted to bowl first. The decision was influenced by the presence of dew in earlier matches at the venue. “I think it is a lot to do with the dew. Last night there was dew and always at the Wankhede it is better to bat second,” Pandya said.
Mumbai currently sit seventh in the IPL standings with only two wins in six games. With the league stage nearing its halfway mark, MI face a tough road ahead and cannot afford many more losses if they hope to reach the playoffs. In their last match, Mumbai handed Delhi Capitals their first defeat of the season. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad are coming off a dominant win over Punjab Kings, where they chased down 246 runs in just 18.3 overs.
