The pair added 84 runs off 47 balls after coming together with New Zealand struggling at 84 for 6 in the 13th over. Their counterattacking stand lifted the Black Caps to 168 for 7 in 20 overs.

In doing so, Santner and McConchie surpassed the previous record of 74 runs for the seventh wicket set by Australia’s Michael Hussey and Steve Smith against Bangladesh in the 2010 edition. Afghanistan’s Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Nabi are third on the list with an unbeaten 71-run partnership against Pakistan in 2021.

Santner led the charge with an aggressive 47 off 26 balls, while McConchie remained unbeaten on 31 from 23 deliveries as the duo shifted momentum in New Zealand’s favor during the closing stages of the innings.

The record-breaking stand proved pivotal in reviving the innings after a middle-order collapse and provided New Zealand with a competitive total in a crucial Super 8 contest.
