India National Cricket Team vs West Indies Cricket Team Standings: Sanju Samson struck an unbeaten 97 to power the India to a five-wicket win over the West Indies in a must-win Super Eight clash of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
Chasing 196, India finished on 199 for five in 19.2 overs to confirm their place in the semi-finals. Samson’s 50-ball knock, which included 12 fours and four sixes, anchored the chase as he held his nerve under pressure and saw the side home with four balls to spare.
He received support from Tilak Varma (27), Suryakumar Yadav (18) and Hardik Pandya (17), who ensured there were no late setbacks in front of a packed crowd in Kolkata.
India will now face the England national cricket team in the second semi-final at Wankhede Stadium on March 5.
Earlier, West Indies posted a competitive 195 for four after being asked to bat. Roston Chase made 40 off 25 balls and added 68 runs for the opening wicket with Shai Hope, who scored 32 off 33 balls.
India pulled things back in the middle overs when Jasprit Bumrah struck twice in the 12th over. However, Rovman Powell (34 not out off 19) and Jason Holder (37 not out off 22) launched a late counter-attack, adding an unbeaten 76 runs for the fifth wicket off 35 balls.
Powell hit 24 runs in the 16th over off Arshdeep Singh to swing momentum back. Arshdeep finished with none for 43, while Bumrah was India’s best bowler with two for 36.
India’s total of 199 now ranks among the highest successful chases in T20 World Cup history. Only England’s 230 for eight against South Africa in 2016 and South Africa’s 208 for two against West Indies in 2007 have come in bigger pursuits in the tournament.
