Sarfaraz Ahmed is set to be appointed as the new Test head coach of Pakistan national cricket team following the side’s early exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, according to the media reports. The 38-year-old former captain is expected to take charge of the red-ball team ahead of Pakistan’s two-match Test series against Bangladesh national cricket team in May. The position has been vacant since October 2025. Azhar Mahmood had served as interim coach during the recent series against South Africa.

Sarfaraz is currently in the United Arab Emirates with the Pakistan Shaheens for a white-ball tour against the England Lions. However, the remainder of that series was called off by the England and Wales Cricket Board due to rising geopolitical tensions in the region. Arrangements are being made to bring players back home.

Despite the disruption, Sarfaraz’s move to the senior Test role is expected to go ahead. The upcoming Bangladesh tour will mark his first assignment in charge, with matches scheduled for May 8 and May 16. The series is part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship.

Sarfaraz recently guided Pakistan’s Under-19 side to the Asia Cup title in December 2025, defeating India in the final. His work with the junior team reportedly impressed Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi, with fans also backing his elevation to the senior coaching setup.

He last played a Test match against Australia in late 2023 and has represented Pakistan in 54 Tests. Sarfaraz remains the last captain to lead the country to a major ICC title, lifting the ICC Champions Trophy after Pakistan defeated India in the final.

Pakistan are currently placed fifth in the World Test Championship standings and will look to improve their position under new leadership. Sarfaraz now faces the challenge of rebuilding the Test side and delivering results in the longer format.
