India national cricket team captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir visited the Shree Siddhivinayak Temple on Saturday to offer prayers with the ICC Men's T20 World Cup trophy following India’s title-winning campaign. The duo was joined by Jay Shah, who accompanied them to the temple as they sought blessings after India’s triumph in the tournament.
India secured the title after defeating New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The victory marked a historic moment for Indian cricket as the team became the first to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, the first to defend the title after its 2024 triumph, and the first side to lift the trophy three times.
Acharya Pawan Tripathi, treasurer of the Siddhivinayak Temple Trust, said the players had also visited the temple earlier in the tournament.
“After winning the T20 World Cup, captain Suryakumar Yadav, coach Gautam Gambhir and ICC chairman Jay Shah came here to offer prayers,” Tripathi said. “Even before the semifinal match, the entire team visited the temple and took blessings.”
Suryakumar was among India’s leading performers in the tournament, scoring 242 runs in nine matches at an average of 30.25, including one half-century.
India finished the group stage unbeaten before suffering a setback in the Super Eight round with a defeat to South Africa national cricket team. The team recovered strongly, defeating West Indies national cricket team in a decisive match before beating England national cricket team in the semifinal and New Zealand in the final.
Tournament winners India received prize money of $2.63 million, while New Zealand earned $1.42 million as runners-up. South Africa and England, the losing semifinalists, received $1 million and $974,423 respectively.
Following the victory, the Board of Control for Cricket in India also announced a cash reward of 1.31 billion rupees ($15.8 million) for the team in recognition of its successful campaign.
