Led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, India became the first team to win three men’s T20 World Cup titles, adding the 2026 crown to earlier triumphs in 2007 and 2024. The victory also made India the first host nation to win the tournament and the first side to secure back-to-back titles in the competition.

Yadav joined former captains MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma as the only Indian captains to lift the T20 World Cup trophy. Dhoni led India to the inaugural title in 2007, while Rohit captained the side to victory in 2024.

India’s latest triumph also marked its third consecutive ICC title in white-ball cricket, following wins in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.

India’s title-winning performance was built on a powerful batting display followed by disciplined bowling. After being asked to bat first, India posted 255 for 5 in 20 overs, one of the highest totals ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. Sanju Samson top-scored with 89 off 46 balls, hitting five fours and eight sixes.

Openers Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan also scored half-centuries, while Shivam Dube finished the innings strongly with an unbeaten 26 off eight balls. For New Zealand, James Neesham was the standout bowler with three wickets.

Chasing 256, New Zealand struggled against India’s disciplined attack and was bowled out for 159 in 19 overs.

Tim Seifert scored 52 off 26 balls, while captain Mitchell Santner added 43 off 35, but the team failed to build meaningful partnerships. India’s bowlers dominated the chase. Jasprit Bumrah produced a match-winning spell of 4 for 15 in four overs, while Axar Patel claimed three wickets to seal a comfortable victory.

The win sparked celebrations across the stadium and among fans nationwide as India capped another memorable chapter in its T20 World Cup history.
