Walking in to bat in the final over of the powerplay, Suryakumar saw wickets fall at regular intervals as India slipped to 46/4 after six overs. The slide continued with the hosts reduced to 77/6, putting them under pressure early in the contest.

The 35-year-old responded with a calm and controlled innings, focusing on rebuilding the total. He stitched a crucial partnership with Axar Patel to take India past the 100-run mark and stabilise the innings.

After anchoring the middle overs, Suryakumar accelerated in the closing stages. He attacked the USA bowlers, including Saurabh Netravalkar, to lift the scoring rate at his home ground.

In his 49-ball knock, Suryakumar remained unbeaten on 84 and also went past 1,000 T20 international runs as India captain during the innings.

His effort helped India recover from a top-order collapse and post a fighting total in their tournament opener.
