India national cricket team captain Suryakumar Yadav made a patriotic gesture after leading the team to a dominant victory over the New Zealand national cricket team in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup on Sunday, March 8, 2026. Moments after India’s 96-run win at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Yadav walked toward the pitch, picked up a handful of soil and placed it on his forehead as teammates celebrated around him.

The gesture came after India produced a clinical all-round performance to secure back-to-back T20 World Cup titles. Yadav became only the third Indian captain to lift the trophy after MS Dhoni, who led the team to the inaugural title in 2007, and Rohit Sharma, who captained India to victory in 2024.

Earlier, Rohit had also made headlines for celebrating in a similar emotional fashion after India’s triumph over South Africa in the 2024 final in Barbados.

India’s latest victory also created history. The team became the first side to win back-to-back ICC Men’s T20 World Cup titles and the first to lift the trophy on home soil.

Yadav also contributed with the bat during the tournament. The 35-year-old finished as India’s fourth-highest run-scorer, scoring 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72, including one half-century.

India’s title-winning performance was built on a powerful batting display followed by disciplined bowling.

After being asked to bat first, India posted 255 for 5 in 20 overs, one of the highest totals ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. Sanju Samson top-scored with 89 off 46 balls, hitting five fours and eight sixes.

Openers Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan also scored half-centuries, while Shivam Dube finished the innings strongly with an unbeaten 26 off eight balls.

For New Zealand, James Neesham was the standout bowler with three wickets.

Chasing 256, New Zealand struggled against India’s disciplined attack and was bowled out for 159 in 19 overs.

Tim Seifert scored 52 off 26 balls, while captain Mitchell Santner added 43 off 35, but the team failed to build meaningful partnerships.

India’s bowlers dominated the chase. Jasprit Bumrah produced a match-winning spell of 4 for 15 in four overs, while Axar Patel claimed three wickets to seal a comfortable victory.

The win sparked celebrations across the stadium and among fans nationwide as India capped another memorable chapter in its T20 World Cup history.
