Chasing a challenging 338-run target, India fell short at 296 all out in 46 overs despite a brilliant century from Virat Kohli and a maiden ODI fifty from lower-order batter Harshit Rana.
Earlier, centuries from Daryl Mitchell (137 not out) and Glenn Phillips (106) powered New Zealand to 337 for 8 after being reduced to 5 for 2 early in the innings. Mitchell and Phillips put on a 219-run stand for the fourth wicket, the second-highest partnership against India for that wicket or lower in ODIs. Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh claimed three wickets each for India.
India’s chase began with promise as openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma made starts. Gill scored 23 off 18 balls, while Sharma managed 11 before being caught at slip on his 100th ODI at home. India slumped to 71 for 4 in 12.5 overs, but Kohli and Nitish Kumar Reddy (53 off 57 balls) staged a counterattack, adding 88 runs for the fifth wicket.
Harshit Rana joined Kohli at 178 for 6 and the duo put on a 99-run partnership, giving India hope. Kohli was unbeaten on 124 off 108 balls, striking 10 fours and three sixes. Harshit finished with 52 off 43 balls, including four boundaries and four sixes.
Despite the valiant effort, New Zealand bowlers Zak Foulkes (3 for 77) and Kristian Clarke (3 for 54) tightened the screws in the final overs, dismissing India’s tail and sealing a 2-1 series win.
New Zealand captain Michael Bracewell remained unbeaten on 28 off 18 balls to guide his team to a formidable total. Mitchell’s century marked his fourth consecutive ODI fifty against India and his ninth overall in ODIs. Phillips also achieved his first 50-plus score in 10 ODI innings against India.
