After opting to bat, West Indies made a brisk start with captain Shai Hope striking 16 off six balls, including two sixes off spinner Keshav Maharaj. Brandon King followed with 21 off 11 deliveries as the Caribbean side raced to 29 in just over two overs.
South Africa’s pacers quickly turned the tide. Kagiso Rabada removed Hope and Shimron Hetmyer in the third over, becoming the Proteas’ second-highest wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history with 32 scalps. Lungi Ngidi then dismissed King and Roston Chase in the next over as West Indies slumped to 52 for 4 at the end of the powerplay.
The slide continued as Corbin Bosch accounted for Sherfane Rutherford, and Ngidi added the wicket of captain Rovman Powell to leave West Indies struggling at 83 for 6 midway through the innings. Bosch later removed Matthew Forde as South Africa tightened their grip.
Holder and Shepherd, however, steadied the innings with a counterattacking stand for the eighth wicket. Holder made 49 off 31 balls, including a late surge, before being dismissed in the final over. Shepherd remained unbeaten on 52 from 37 deliveries, striking three fours and four sixes to push the total to a competitive score.
Ngidi was the pick of the South Africa bowlers with figures of 3 for 30, while Rabada (2 for 22) and Bosch (2 for 31) provided strong support.
