Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has jumped up five spots in the latest ICC Rankings to be ranked the No. 1 ODI bowler in the world. He overtakes Trent Boult and is now on the top of the list.

Bumrah guided India to a crushing 10-wicket victory over England in the first ODI on Tuesday. He ended with marvelous figures of 6/19, which is also his career-best figures in ODIs and his second five-wicket haul.

The 28-year-old began England’s downfall by bowling a double-wicket maiden in his very first over, sending back Jason Roy and Joe Root. He had Jonny Bairstow caught behind soon after before castling Liam Livingstone to end a fantastic spell that read 5-2-9-4.

Bumrah then came back to clean up the tail, dislodging the bails of Brydon Carse and David Willey to register India’s third-best figures in ODI history. He now leads the list and is followed by Boult, Shaheen Afridi, Josh Hazelwood, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the top 5.

Speaking about his stunning spell, Bumrah said he did his best to exploit the overcast conditions at hand and didn’t try too many variations.

“When there’s swing and seam movement, it is very exciting in white-ball cricket to get that opportunity because you have to be defensive with the kind of pitches we usually get. When I bowled the first ball, I found some swing and we tried to exploit that.”

“When it doesn’t swing, I have to pull my lengths back. When the ball is doing something you don’t have to try a lot. When the wicket is flat your accuracy is tested. It is a good place to be when the ball is swinging,” Bumrah said after winning the Player of the Match award.

India takes a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series with the next game set to be played on Thursday.

He had scored 117 in the last match of the three-match T20I series against England. West Indies captain Nicholas Puran, who led his side to an unbeaten 74 in the final match of the series against Bangladesh, moved up five places to eighth.

Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who took three wickets for 15 runs in the second T20 International against England in Birmingham, has jumped seven places to a career-best seventh position. Leg-spinner Yujvendra Chahal is 19th with a two-place advantage.
