The 2012 film Barfi, directed by Anurag Basu and starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Ileana D'cruz, initially garnered modest success but later achieved immense popularity. Its story and music remain beloved by audiences.

Basu originally envisioned Katrina Kaif for the role of Shruti Ghosh, ultimately played by Ileana D'cruz, even wanting Kaif to narrate the film. Kaif declined, reportedly unsure about the role's impact in a two-heroine narrative. Basu drew inspiration from his mother for D'Cruz's character. Many scenes were inspired by Charlie Chaplin's films.

Barfi became a box office hit and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards, earning nearly Rs 100 crores. Basu later reunited Kaif and Kapoor in the 2017 film Jagga Jasoos, which Kapoor also produced, but it proved to be a box office failure.
