As the world celebrates Women’s Day, actress Raviraa Bhardwaj opens up about the women who inspire her, the evolving portrayal of women in television, and the changes she hopes to see in the industry.
When asked about the women she looks up to, Raviraa doesn’t hesitate. “I look up to my mother, Dr. Uma Bhardwaj, because she is an epitome of strength, grace, and intelligence. Being a vice chancellor in a male-dominated field, she has broken barriers with sheer dedication and resilience. She has always encouraged me to follow my dreams while staying grounded.”
On the subject of women’s representation on television, she believes there’s still room for improvement. “While there has been significant progress, many TV shows still rely on outdated stereotypes when portraying women. There’s a need for more layered, independent, and complex female characters who reflect real-life struggles and ambitions rather than just being defined by relationships or sacrifices.”
Her most personal role to date? “My role in Aisa Q deeply resonated with me. It was my first film as a lead and dealt with a powerful subject. The character had depth, strength, and vulnerability, which made the journey very personal and fulfilling.”
Despite the rise of strong female characters, gender pay disparity remains an issue in the television industry. “Yes, pay disparity still exists. Despite the growing recognition of female-led shows, male actors often command higher fees. It’s improving, but we still have a long way to go to ensure equal pay for equal work.”
So, what change does she wish to see in the industry? “I would love to see more female-led projects with strong, well-written characters. Also, better working conditions, equal pay, and a safer environment on set should be a priority. Women in all roles—actors, directors, writers, and crew members—deserve equal opportunities and respect.”
With the rise of female influencers on social media, does she believe the platform is free from gender bias? “Not entirely. While social media has given women a platform to voice their opinions and build careers independently, biases still exist. Female influencers often face more scrutiny, trolling, and unrealistic expectations compared to their male counterparts. However, it is a space that allows women to challenge these norms and redefine their own narratives.”
As Women’s Day serves as a reminder of progress and the work still needed, Raviraa Bhardwaj stands firm in advocating for change, equality, and respect for women in all walks of life.
