Veteran Filmmaker Kumar Shahani, best known for films such as Maya Darpan and Tarang, passed away on Saturday (February 24) morning in Kolkata at the age of 83. The filmmaker was an FTII Pune alumni. His film Maya Darpan, based on the short story by Hindi writer Nirmal Verma, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

The veteran director Kumar Shahani succumbed to death after he had a fall in Kolkata. He was 83. The filmmaker is known for his art films spanned across 6 decades.He also directed Char Adhyay in 1997, inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's novel. The film portrays a group of young intellectuals and revolutionaries during the Bengali Renaissance of the 1930s and 1940s.
