Vipul Amrutlal Shah is regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most fearless and visionary filmmakers, known for consistently backing hard-hitting stories rooted in truth and reality. After creating a massive impact with The Kerala Story 2, the filmmaker is now gearing up for another powerful narrative with his upcoming film Governor. Inspired by true events, the film sheds light on India’s worst economic meltdown during the 1990s.

Recently, amid PM Modi’s remarks on protecting the nation's economic stability, urging citizens to take measures, amidst the ongoing global crisis, Vipul Shah shared his thoughts on the same on social media. In his post, the filmmaker said he agrees with the Prime Minister’s concerns and praised the efforts being taken to protect the country’s economy. He also revealed that Governor is rooted in a very similar backdrop, reflecting the economic struggles and uncertainties faced by India during the Gulf War era.

Vipul Amrutlal Shah said, “I completely agree with the concern expressed by our honourable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. What may seem like simple suggestions being careful about fuel consumption or being mindful about gold purchases, are actually connected to protecting India’s economic stability and forex reserves.”

He added, “Interestingly, my film Governor is also rooted in a very similar backdrop. The film is set in 1990, when the Gulf War shook India’s economy to such an extent that gold had to leave the country to stabilise the nation. Today, with global fuel uncertainty and geopolitical tensions once again making headlines, it almost feels surreal to see certain realities mirroring the world and concerns explored in my film. Sometimes, patriotism is also about responsibility.”

Backed by Sunshine Pictures and presented by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, Governor draws inspiration from lesser-known historical events that shaped the nation. The film stars Manoj Bajpayee in a never-seen-before avatar as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, promising a gripping and intense performance. Helmed by acclaimed Marathi filmmaker and actor Chinmay Mandlekar, the teaser has already sparked curiosity with its powerful narrative and intriguing portrayal of one of India’s most crucial economic phases.

With hard-hitting dialogues, this incredible story is presented by Sunshine Pictures. Produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and directed by Chinmay Mandlekar, the film is co-produced by Aashin A. Shah and written by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah. With lyrics by Javed Akhtar, the music of the film is composed by Amit Trivedi. The film will be released on 12th June 2026.
