Actor-filmmaker Riteish Deshmukh has strongly condemned recent remarks of Dhirendra Krishna Shastri about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He described them as “twisted and baseless” amid an intensifying controversy. The issue erupted after spiritual preacher Dhirendra Shastri made controversial statements during a foundation stone ceremony of Bhardurga Shaktisthal in Nagpur. His comments sparked outrage across various sections of society, with many accusing him of misrepresenting historical facts and undermining the legacy of the revered Maratha ruler, leading to widespread criticism on social media and beyond.

Reacting to the backlash, Deshmukh took to X and posted a strongly worded message in Marathi. Sharing his feelings as a devoted follower and admirer of Shivaji Maharaj, he stated that any attempt to spread misleading narratives about such a respected figure is unacceptable. He emphasized that such remarks are deeply hurtful and provoke anger among Shivaji’s followers. The actor asserted that efforts to diminish the ruler’s monumental legacy would not be tolerated under any circumstances by those who hold him in the highest regard.

Continuing his statement, Deshmukh used powerful imagery to underline the enduring legacy of Shivaji Maharaj. He said that just as the Sahyadri mountain ranges have stood tall for millions of years, the name of Shivaji Maharaj will continue to inspire generations for countless years to come. He described the Maratha leader as a symbol of valor and sovereignty, referring to him as a महान king from the Kshatriya lineage and an emperor whose influence remains timeless, reinforcing the emotional and cultural significance attached to his legacy.

The controversy originated from remarks made by Shastri during his speech, where he claimed that Shivaji Maharaj had grown weary of constant battles and sought rest. According to him, the Maratha king once approached Samarth Ramdas, placed his crown before him, and expressed his desire to step away from warfare, asking the saint to take charge of the kingdom. These claims were widely criticised for lacking historical authenticity and for portraying the warrior king in a manner many believe contradicts established historical accounts.

Amid the ongoing debate, Deshmukh is preparing for the release of his upcoming film Raja Shivaji, where he portrays Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The historical drama, backed by Jyoti Deshpande and Genelia Deshmukh under Mumbai Film Company and presented by Jio Studios, is slated to hit theatres on May 1. The film explores the early life of Shivaji Maharaj, highlighting his vision of Swarajya and his determined resistance against dominant powers, while featuring a star-studded cast including Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Bhagyashree, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Boman Irani.
