The menstrual cycle significantly impacts women's health, yet many women experience menstrual-related issues due to modern lifestyles and poor diets. For some, menstruation brings dread due to abdominal pain, lower back pain, or heavy bleeding. While painkillers offer relief, they can have adverse effects. Hormonal fluctuations, poor diet, and lifestyle changes can worsen these problems, highlighting the importance of a proper diet. Certain foods provide essential nutrients, balance hormones, and alleviate menstrual discomfort.

Everyday 'superfoods' can minimize menstrual issues. Dr. Anushi Jain's Instagram post details foods that act as natural remedies for specific ailments. Knowing which foods address specific symptoms is crucial for managing menstrual discomfort. Let's explore beneficial foods for seven common menstrual-related issues.

Which Foods Should You Eat for Specific Menstrual Ailments?

1. Cumin water is a natural remedy for menstrual abdominal pain and cramps. Uterine contractions during menstruation cause pain, which cumin's anti-spasmodic properties can alleviate by relaxing uterine muscles. Cumin water also aids digestion, eases bloating, enhances blood circulation, and combats weakness due to iron content. To prepare, boil one teaspoon of cumin seeds in a glass of water until reduced by half, then strain and drink lukewarm. Alternatively, soak cumin seeds overnight, warm the water slightly, and drink on an empty stomach.

2. Raisins and Dates for Heavy Bleeding: Excessive blood loss (heavy bleeding) during menstruation can deplete the body's iron levels, leading to feelings of weakness. In such instances, consuming dates and soaked raisins proves beneficial. If you are experiencing very heavy bleeding, incorporate dates and soaked raisins into your daily diet. These foods help maintain the body's iron levels and alleviate weakness. Soak 8 to 10 raisins in half a glass of water overnight; in the morning, drink the water on an empty stomach and chew and eat the soaked raisins. You may consume 2 to 3 dates throughout the day—either during breakfast or as a mid-day snack.

3. Bananas and Roasted Chickpeas for Mood Swings: Many women experience symptoms such as irritability, crying spells without any apparent reason, or a generally low mood (mood swings) either prior to or during their menstrual period. In such instances, consuming bananas or roasted chickpeas proves to be highly beneficial. Bananas contain Vitamin B6 and potassium, which help boost the production of "happy hormones" in the brain, while roasted chickpeas help alleviate irritability by regulating blood sugar levels.

4. Cravings for Sweets Before Menstruation: Many women experience intense cravings for sweets in the days leading up to their menstrual period. At such times, opting for dark chocolate, dates, dry fruits, yogurt, or seeds—rather than regular chocolates or sugary sweets—is extremely beneficial. These foods help maintain balanced blood sugar levels and provide an energy boost.

5. Delayed Menstruation: If your menstrual cycle is irregular or delayed, consuming sesame seeds and jaggery can be highly beneficial. You may also consume "Til Laddoos" (sesame and jaggery balls). Both sesame seeds and jaggery are warming foods; they assist in maintaining hormonal balance within the body and help regulate the menstrual cycle.

6. Bloating or Gas: During menstruation, hormonal fluctuations in the body can slow down the digestive system, leading to issues such as gas and indigestion. Carom seeds (Ajwain) contain a compound called "thymol," which stimulates digestive enzymes and accelerates the digestion of food. This facilitates the release of trapped gas from the stomach, thereby alleviating the sensation of heaviness or bloating. Add one teaspoon of carom seeds to a glass of water and bring it to a boil. Strain the liquid and consume it while it is still lukewarm; this provides immediate relief to the stomach and resolves digestive complaints.

7. Fatigue During Menstruation: The body requires increased energy levels during the days of menstruation. Soft-cooked Khichdi (a rice and lentil dish) served with *Ghee* (clarified butter) is light on the digestive system and provides an instant surge of strength to the body. Consuming Khichdi with Ghee is an effective remedy for combating the fatigue commonly experienced during the menstrual period. Rice is an excellent source of carbohydrates. Softly cooked Khichdi provides the body with an immediate supply of glucose, thereby alleviating fatigue and providing instant energy. Khichdi is a type of 'comfort food' that...
