When the uric acid produced within the body is not completely eliminated and instead accumulates, the severity of the condition increases. Consequently, bones and joints may feel stiff or rigid.

Swelling may also occur in the feet and other parts of the body. For some individuals, this can even lead to the formation of kidney stones. Therefore, it is essential to take precautions to prevent uric acid levels from rising. With this in mind, let us examine which foods should be consumed and which should be avoided to keep uric acid levels in check.

Which foods should be avoided to prevent uric acid levels from rising?

Individuals with high levels of uric acid in their bodies should strictly avoid consuming red meat, organ meat, and seafood. Instead, they should prioritize a vegetarian diet. Additionally, one should avoid packaged fruit juices available in the market, carbonated beverages (sodas), foods containing trans fats, and cold drinks.  This is because these items cause uric acid levels in the body to rise rapidly. It is also imperative to give up the habit of consuming alcohol, as it is a major contributing factor to elevated uric acid levels.

Which foods should be consumed to alleviate uric acid-related issues?

According to Kamini Sharma, a nutritionist based in Noida, drinking plenty of water is crucial for reducing uric acid-related discomfort. Furthermore, one should incorporate oats, daliya (broken wheat porridge), brown rice, and green leafy vegetables into their diet. However, you should avoid consuming spinach and mushrooms. Additionally, consume a good amount of Vitamin C-rich fruits. Foods abundant in antioxidants, as well as low-fat dairy products, also help facilitate the elimination of uric acid from the body.
