New Delhi, June 24 A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) will look after the Delhi's largest COVID-19 care centre, the paramilitary force on Wednesday took over the 10,000 bed capacity centre in Delhi, officials said.

A team of the ITBP troopers visited the Radha Soami Beas centre in south Delhi's Chattarpur and held discussion with the Delhi government officials and other stakeholders who are partnering to run the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) care centre.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had on Tuesday said the centre has been entrusted to the ITBP. On Tuesday, the Union Home Ministry nominated ITBP as the nodal agency to provide the doctors and team of other professionals to this centre as requested by the Delhi government.

An ITBP official said, a 2,000 bed facility will be operational at the centre from June 26. He said that the total bed capacity may go up to 10,200 and it will be the largest single Covid-19 care centre in the national capital and the country.

He said more than 1,000 doctors of the ITBP and other CAPFs (Central Armed Paramilitary Forces) and 2,000 more paramedical, assistant and security staff will be deployed at the facility to operate. South Delhi District Administration will provide administrative support to the Centre. The ITBP was the first to create 1,000 bed COVID-19 care centre in the country.

The national capital has been witnessing a spike of corona cases on a daily basis. On Tuesday, Delhi witnessed a surge of 3,947 fresh COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of positive patients in Delhi surged to 66,602 cases with 2,301 fatalities.
