The Kerala government has announced the launch of specialised menopause clinics across district hospitals, underscoring its focus on women’s healthcare. The decision was revealed on Thursday during the presentation of the state budget in the Assembly. Finance Minister K N Balagopal stated that Rs 3 crore has been allocated for setting up these clinics. Menopause is a natural biological stage in a woman’s life, yet it often remains under-recognised in mainstream healthcare. Women undergoing this transition frequently face hormonal fluctuations, sleep-related problems, emotional distress, anxiety, and bone health issues, which can significantly affect their quality of life and overall well-being.
Health experts note that the lack of structured medical support during menopause leaves many women managing symptoms without proper guidance. The Kerala government’s initiative aims to bridge this gap by offering focused and accessible care through the public health system. By institutionalising menopause-related services, the state hopes to promote early diagnosis, timely treatment, and awareness about long-term health risks associated with this phase. Officials believe the move will encourage more women to seek medical advice without hesitation, reducing stigma and neglect surrounding menopause and helping women lead healthier and more comfortable lives during midlife and beyond.
According to officials, the upcoming clinics will operate as comprehensive care centres providing multiple services at one location. These include medical consultations, psychological counselling, screenings for heart health, bone density, and hormonal balance, along with medicines and lifestyle advice. The initiative places Kerala alongside Maharashtra, which earlier became the first state in India to introduce menopause clinics in government hospitals and urban health facilities. Maharashtra launched its programme on Makar Sankranti earlier this year, creating a model that Kerala has now chosen to follow and expand upon through its public healthcare framework.
