Crime against women down by over 21% in cities: NCRB report

New Delhi, Sep 15 The crime against women in cities has declined by 21.1 per cent in the year 2020 in comparison to 2019, the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) said in its latest report.

As per the data, a total of 35,331 cases of crime against women were registered last year whereas the number of cases in 2019 was 44,783, showing a decrease of 21.1 per cent.

It also disclosed that majority of cases under crime against women were registered under 'Cruelty by Husband or his Relatives' 30.2 per cent, followed by 'Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty' 19.7 per cent, 'Kidnapping and Abduction of Women' 19.0 per cent and 'Rape' 7.2 per cent.

The number of crimes against women in Delhi has declined by 24.18 per cent last year. The total number of cases reported in 2020 was 9,782 over 12,902 in 2019.

Mumbai has also recorded a decrease in crime against women as it recorded 4,583 cases last year in comparison to 6,519 cases in 2019 while Jaipur reported 2,369 cases over 3,417 during the same period.

Last year, Bangaluru recorded 2,730 cases over 3,486 in 2019 whereas Hyderabad reported 2,390 cases over 2,755 in the same period.

Despite a decreasing trend in almost all cities, Kolkata and Lucknow recorded an increase of over 35 and 8 per cent respectively in crime against women.

In 2020, Kolkata recorded 2,001 cases over 1,474 in 2019 while Lucknow recorded 2,636 cases against 2,425 in 2019.

Under the dowry death cases under section 304 B(IPC) in 2020, a total of 358 cases were reported while Delhi recorded the highest number of cases 109 followed by 48 cases in Lucknow while Kanpur and Jaipur recorded 30 and 26 cases respectively.

A total of 10,733 cases of cruelty by husband or his relatives under sections 498A (IPC) were reported in cities in 2020 and Delhi recorded the highest number with 2,570 cases, followed by Hyderabad with 1,226 and Jaipur with 1,043 cases.

In 2020, as many as 5,599 women were victims of kidnapping & abduction in cities under section 336(IPC) while Delhi recorded 2,637 cases, followed by 484 cases in Bangluru and 335 cases in Indore.
