An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck the East China Sea on Wednesday morning, May 20, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The quake occurred at 8:16 am IST on May 20, 2026, at a depth of 33 kilometres. The epicentre was located at latitude 27.523 north and longitude 128.418 east, according to NSC.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the earthquake. Authorities are monitoring the situation, while further details are awaited. The East China Sea region is considered seismically active and experiences earthquakes of varying intensity from time to time.
Earlier on Wednesday, an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck off Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The tremors occurred at 11:46 pm at a depth of 50 kilometres and measured upper 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale of 7 in the worst-hit areas of the Amami island region in Kagoshima Prefecture, the JMA said.
The epicentre of the quake was located near Okinawa Main Island at a latitude of 27.5 degrees north and a longitude of 128.6 degrees east.
No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake, according to the JMA.
