The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) has officially declared that Eid Al-Fitr 2025 will be celebrated on Monday, March 31. The council said that the Shawwal 1446 AH crescent moon will be born on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 9.57 PM Sydney time (Australia local time) and 6.57 PM Perth time, both occurring after sunset, making the moon invisible before the evening prayers (Maghrib). Due to this the country will fast for 30 days, with Sunday (March 30).

"The Australian Fatwa Council has confirmed, after further inquiries with both local and global observatories, that in Sydney, the new moon of Shawwal will be born on Saturday, 29th March 2025, at 9:57 PM AEST—after sunset on that night. In Perth, the new moon will be born on the same day at 6:57 PM AWST, also after sunset. As the new moon will be born after sunset in both cities, the following day cannot be the first of the Month of Shawwal," said ANIC in a post on X.

"The method by which the Grand Mufti of Australia and the Australian Fatwa Council determined the end of the month of Ramadan, the first day of Shawwal, and the day of Eid Al-Fitr is based on the calculated birth of the moon before sunset, the duration of the moonset after sunset, and the possibility of sighting the moon. This is a method that has been adopted by many prominent and reputable global scholarly councils," said the council further in the post.
Therefore, Eid celebrations will take place across Australia on Monday, March 31, marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal.
