Italian chemist Francesco Rivella, credited as the inventor of Nutella, passed away on Valentine’s Day at the age of 97, according to multiple reports. Dubbed the “father” of Nutella by the Italian media, Rivella played a key role in creating the world’s most iconic hazelnut spread.

He joined Ferrero, the renowned Italian chocolate and confectionery company, in 1952—12 years before Nutella's official launch—shortly after earning his degree in bromatological chemistry in Turin at the age of 25, as reported by news agency Jam Press.

Rivella worked in Ferrero’s "chemistry room," where many of the brand’s most iconic products were developed. As part of the Ferrero team, he played a key role in analyzing raw materials and experimenting with ingredient blends to create and refine new flavors. Over his long career at the company, Rivella rose through the ranks to become a senior manager. Ferrero, known for its popular confections, was founded in 1946 by Pietro Ferrero.

Rivella also served as president of the Order of Chemists of Piedmont. After retiring, he settled in Alba, where he devoted himself to fruit farming and the traditional ball game pallapugno. A widower, he is survived by three sons, a daughter, and seven grandchildren. His funeral was held today in Alba, and he will be laid to rest in Barbaresco. His passing comes just days before the tenth anniversary of Michele Ferrero’s death.
