US President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, March 4, while addressing a joint session of Congress, said that India charges auto tariffs higher than 100%. Trump slammed India, among other countries, for having policies that are "unfair to Americans."

Trump warned that reciprocal tariffs will kick in on April 2, 2025. "This is happening by friend and foe," he said. He further stated that whatever the other countries tax America, we will tax them in return. The US has historically charged lower tariffs than those levied by many of its trading partners. Whatever they tax us, we will tax them," he said.

Trump said, "We will take in trillions and trillions of dollars and create jobs like we have never seen before." He said that these tariffs will make America rich again. "We've been ripped off for decades by every country on Earth, and we will not let that happen any longer."

After being elected US President for the second time, Trump made several different changes in US trading policies with the rest of the world. He imposed tariffs on some $1.4 trillion in US imports from Canada, Mexico, and China—with further levies in the pipeline. India is vulnerable to a 25 percent tariff on all steel and aluminium imports earlier announced by Trump, which can lead to cheaper steel being dumping in India by other countries.
